PVG, not DBS

If your school or council asks about driver checks, note that Scotland uses the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme, run by Disclosure Scotland. The Scottish Government’s school transport guidance says drivers and escorts on school transport must be PVG scheme members because they do regulated work with children, and that a school or council can ask to see a driver’s disclosure for a service it has commissioned, with the driver’s consent.

This guidance is written for home-to-school transport. Many councils and schools apply the same standard to trips, which is why we answer it here.

Seatbelts

The same guidance says a school authority must make sure seatbelts are fitted in vehicles used for its school transport, including contractors’ vehicles. For a trip, every seat in our own vehicles has a belt. If a partner operator’s vehicle is used, ask us to confirm in writing that every seat has one.

Coaches are slower than cars and school-run traffic adds time, so we agree a departure time with margin. We also run longer school and university trips across the UK, and to Ireland and continental Europe.

What a school trip costs

The three biggest price factors for a school trip:

  • Hours. A day is up to 10 hours; extra hours may be charged. A long day can need a second driver under the drivers’ hours rules.
  • Whether the coach waits at the destination or goes away and comes back.
  • Vehicle size for the number of pupils and staff.

Prices from: a 53-seat coach from £1,200 a day, or from £1,500 in peak season. A 16-seat minibus from £375 for an airport pick-up. Prices differ by season.

Every quote is in writing and lists what is included: fuel, mileage, the driver, road and bridge tolls, standard parking, waiting time during the hire, bottled water and Wi-Fi. Ferry crossings and coach-park charges at venues are charged at cost and shown on the quote. Attraction tickets, food and gratuity are not included. Per-pupil cost is the quote divided by the number travelling. See the coach hire price guide for published benchmarks and how prices are built. All services: our services.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a seatbelt for every pupil?

Yes. Our Tourismo, Volvo B8R and Sprinter each have a seatbelt at every passenger seat. Ask us to confirm it in writing for any trip. Scottish Government guidance requires school authorities to make sure vehicles used for school transport have seatbelts fitted.

Are your vehicles wheelchair accessible?

Our own vehicles are wheelchair accessible. Tell us when you book.

How do we pay?

A 50% deposit books the trip. The balance is due 7 days before departure.

Where can a coach drop pupils at Glasgow Science Centre?

The centre says school coaches can use the roadside drop-off in front of the main building for up to 5 minutes, then move to its free coach parking nearby, which needs an access code from the centre.

Do you take university and college groups?

Yes, for field trips, fixtures and society trips. The same licence and insurance checks apply.
