Coach hire from Glasgow to Edinburgh
Ritaat Coaches runs private coaches and minibuses with a driver from Glasgow to Edinburgh and back. The trip is about 47 miles on the M8: about an hour’s driving, so allow 1 hour 30 minutes door to door. Coaches set down free at Castle Terrace for up to 30 minutes, then park while you’re out.

The journey at a glance
| Distance | About 47 miles (46.6 miles by one route planner) |
|---|---|
| Road | M8, motorway the whole way between the two cities |
| Driving time | About 1 hour with no traffic (59 minutes by one route planner) |
| Door to door | Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes, more in weekday rush hours or on big event days [verify typical peak delay] |
| Vehicles | Our Mercedes Sprinter minibus (16 seats), our Mercedes Tourismo (53 seats) or Volvo B8R (38 seats) coach, or partner vehicles for larger groups |
When to leave
M8 traffic is heaviest in the weekday morning and evening peaks [verify typical peak hours]. For a morning arrival in Edinburgh we suggest leaving Glasgow before the peak or allowing extra time, and we build that into the pick-up time we give you. On event days (rugby at Murrayfield, the Festival in August, the Christmas markets) we add more time for traffic in Edinburgh itself.
Where a coach can drop off and park in Edinburgh
The City of Edinburgh Council sets the rules for coaches, and they are stricter than many groups expect:
| Rule | What the council says |
|---|---|
| Designated drop-off and pick-up | Castle Terrace, free for up to 30 minutes. Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 6.30pm, Sunday 12.30pm to 6.30pm |
| Stopping where there is no coach bay (for example on yellow lines) | No more than two minutes at one place, so the group must be ready on the kerb |
| Medium-stay coach parking | Regent Road and Inverleith Place, Monday to Friday only, 8.30am to 5.30pm, up to nine hours, £9.80 an hour |
| Short-stay coach parking | None available at present |
| Long-stay and weekends | The council provides none; two private coach parks (Pringle’s Coach Park and the Edinburgh Coach and Truck Park) offer 24-hour secure parking |
What this means for your day: on a weekday the coach parks in a council bay at Regent Road or Inverleith Place. On a Saturday or Sunday there is no council coach parking, so the coach uses a private coach park. Coach-park charges at venues that charge coaches are charged at cost and shown on your quote.
Rules are changing: the council approved an update to its coach plan on 2 April 2026, so locations may change. We check the rules before each trip.
Murrayfield: event guidance says there is no public parking at the stadium and supporters can be dropped on either side of the stadium where suitable. Arrangements change by event, so we follow that event’s travel notice [verify for each event]. See sports and supporters’ coaches.
A typical return day
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 08:45 | Pick-up in Glasgow (hotel, school or hall) |
| 10:00 | Set-down at Castle Terrace (free, up to 30 minutes) |
| 10:15 | Coach goes to parking: Regent Road or Inverleith Place on a weekday, a private coach park at the weekend; the driver takes a break |
| 16:30 | Pick-up at Castle Terrace or another agreed point (be ready: two-minute stop where there is no bay) |
| 17:45 to 18:15 | Back in Glasgow, depending on traffic |
Times are an example, not a timetable. The driver stays with the vehicle or nearby and keeps their phone on, so you can call if plans change.
Can the driver wait in Edinburgh while we visit? Yes, within drivers’ hours rules. The assimilated rules on GOV.UK allow up to 9 hours of driving a day, with a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours, and require 11 hours’ rest a day (which can be cut to 9 hours up to three times between weekly rests). A Glasgow–Edinburgh day has about 2 hours of driving, so it fits. What can limit a very long day, or an evening event after a full day out, is the rest-period rule, which may mean a second driver; we would show that in the quote.

What it costs

Glasgow to Edinburgh questions
How long does a coach take from Glasgow to Edinburgh?
About an hour of driving for the 47 miles on the M8; allow about 1 hour 30 minutes door to door, and longer in weekday rush hours or on big event days in Edinburgh.
Where can a coach drop off in Edinburgh?
At Castle Terrace, the council’s designated coach drop-off and pick-up point, free for up to 30 minutes. Elsewhere, where there is no coach bay, a coach may stop for only two minutes, so the group must be ready on the kerb.
Where does the coach park while we’re out?
On weekdays, at council coach parking on Regent Road or Inverleith Place, up to nine hours at £9.80 an hour. At weekends there is no council coach parking, so the coach uses a private coach park such as Pringle’s or the Edinburgh Coach and Truck Park.
Can the driver wait in Edinburgh while we visit?
Yes. The driver parks, takes their break and collects you at the agreed time. A day trip has about 2 hours of driving, well within the 9-hour daily limit; a very long day may need a second driver because of the daily rest rules.
Can you take us from Glasgow to Edinburgh Airport?
Yes. Edinburgh Airport is about 40 miles from Glasgow city centre, around 50 minutes with no traffic. Send your flight times and luggage count with your quote request.
Can you do a one-way trip to Edinburgh?
Yes. We can drop off one day and collect another day, or run one way only. Send us the dates and we quote it in writing.
